Research has shown that bosses who create a hostile work environment end up hurting their employees as well as the performance of the entire team. A survey conducted by Professor Wayne Hochwarter at The University of Florida found that workplace bullying has the following negative effects on victims and their performance:
- 30% of employees slowed down or purposely made errors, compared with 6% of those not reporting abuse.
- 27% of employees purposely hid from the boss, compared with 4% of those not abused.
- 33% of employees confessed to not putting in maximum effort, compared with 9% of those not abused.
- 29% of employees took sick time off even when not ill, compared with 4% of those not abused.
- 25% of employees took more or longer breaks, compared with 7% of those not abused."
Stanford Professor Robert Sutton and author of " The No A--hole Rule" wrote that the "estimated total cost of a--hole for one year" is $160,000. These costs include time spent by HR managers, executives, and employment lawyers dealing with the bad boss and the hostile work environment that he has created and anger-management training and counseling. Costs to the company can skyrocket if the company is hit with a hostile work environment, sexual harassment, discrimination, or retaliation lawsuit by the employee and/or the EEOC.
